privacy
In one line: the files you open here never leave your browser. The rest of this page is about the little that is recorded, and by whom.
who is responsible
keepfileslocal (keepfileslocal.com) is run by the operator of this site, who is the controller of the small amount of data described here under the UK and EU General Data Protection Regulation. For anything to do with privacy, including a request about your own data, the address is hello@keepfileslocal.com.
the files you open
Images and PDFs you drop into a tool are read by the JavaScript already running on the page, in your device's memory. There is no upload: no request carries that content, and this site has no application server that could receive it. Close the tab and nothing remains.
Some tools fetch more of their own code the first time you use them — the PDF tools load a rendering engine, and the two password tools load a second one, about a megabyte each. Those requests come from this site and carry nothing but a request for a file. Everything travels towards your device; nothing goes the other way.
A password you type into protect a PDF or remove a PDF password is treated exactly like the document: it is used in the page to encrypt or decrypt the file, and it is discarded along with the worker that used it when the job ends. It is never transmitted, and there is nowhere here that could hold it.
Because that content is never collected, there is nothing for us to retain, correct or delete on your behalf. After each job the tool prints the number of network requests the page made while it worked; you can confirm the same figure in your browser's network panel.
what is recorded
| Data | What for | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Page visited, referring page, browser and device type, approximate country | Knowing which tools are used and where to improve them | Legitimate interest, aggregated and not identifying |
| An event recording that a tool ran, and whether it succeeded | Knowing which tool fails most and for which reading | Legitimate interest |
| Technical logs kept by the host (IP address, time, path) | Security and operation of the site | Legitimate interest |
Analytics is Umami, configured without cookies and without a person identifier: it does not follow you between sites or between visits. It never records what you opened, the name of your file or its size.
cookies
The site itself sets no cookies: there is no login, no basket and no preference to remember. The light or dark appearance follows your system setting, with nothing stored.
No advertising is served at the moment, so no advertising cookie is set either. When that changes this page will say what is set, by whom, and how to refuse it.
who else is involved
We sell and share nothing. The third parties involved are Cloudflare, which hosts the pages and keeps technical access logs; Umami, which receives the cookieless, aggregated statistics. Each processes that data under its own policy, and none of them receives the content you open.
for how long
File contents: for as long as the page is open, never beyond it. Aggregated statistics: for the analytics plan's retention period, and never in a form that identifies a person. Host logs: for a limited period set by Cloudflare for security and operation.
children
This site is not directed at children and knowingly collects nothing from anyone under 13. As there is no account, there is also no profile to create.
your rights
You have the right to know what is processed, to obtain a copy, to have it corrected or erased, to object, and to withdraw consent. Since the site holds nothing that identifies you, there is in practice little to hand over or erase — which is exactly the intention. Even so, write to hello@keepfileslocal.com with any request and it will be answered within thirty days.
For data processed by Google in advertising, requests about your own data should be directed to Google through the channels in its policy.
changes
When something changes — a new tool, a different analytics provider, a different advertising supplier — this page is updated and the date below changes with it.
